Religious Hate Bill Defeat
Well the anti-race/anti-religious hate bill proposed by the government has been been resoundingly defeated in the houses of parliament adding yet another scar on the pitted hide of the prime minister’s political career and the whole country breaths a collective sigh of relief. This still leaves the question though, why did they want this daft legislation in the first place?
You would expect bloggers to be raging about all this but it seems that some are still pondering what to say and others are avoiding the whole subject like a giant dog poo on the pavement of life. Certainly is one hot potato.

Here is a a fellow who argues for the sanctity of the freedom of speech and quite right too.
Existing legislation protects the individual quite well and stifles the rabble-rousers but I am still left pondering who exactly this legislation was supposed to benefit exactly? Given current events I suspect that question is important.

One thought that has crossed my mind is that, given the lengths the government normally goes to to get its MPs to attend and vote on contentious legislation it was awfully lax this time.
Twenty odd Mps were sent up to canvas a by election and Blair himself didn’t even vote. The media has explained this away as being some kind of balls up. A possible alternate explanation is that the legilslation was never meant to be passed
My thoughts entirely. So then why do this at all? I suspect that this is a manoeuvre to “appear to be doing something” when of course you aren’t doing anything at all. It is my suspicion that Her Majesty’s Government may be preparing to form new allegiances and this is a signal. Interesting days ahead. Not the first time they have “played both sides”.
Defeated?
Only for the moment Mister Grady
Only for the moment.
