		<description>My thoughts entirely. So then why do this at all? I suspect that this is a manoeuvre to "appear to be doing something" when of course you aren't doing anything at all. It is my suspicion that Her Majesty's Government may be preparing to form new allegiances and this is a signal. Interesting days ahead. Not the first time they have "played both sides".</description>

		<description>One thought that has crossed my mind is that, given the lengths the government normally goes to to get its MPs to attend and vote on contentious legislation it was awfully lax this time.

Twenty odd Mps were sent up to canvas a by election and Blair himself didn't even vote. The media has explained this away as being some kind of balls up. A possible alternate explanation is that the legilslation was never meant to be passed</description>
