Fifty St James

I think its the inquisitive child in me that always wants to know what goes on behind closed doors, particularly if an air of exclusivity surrounds those doors. Its not that I want to be part of the world that lies behind, I don’t think its really my kind of thing but I do like to take a peek every once in a while so I didn’t need asking twice when Angela invited us for drinks at Fifty St James last night with a few friends. The first thing that strikes you as you approach the hallowed steps is how many staff/security are loitering in the doorway and reception area, you would think they stored gold bullion there by the presence. The next hurdle is negotiating entrance with the ruthlessly efficient girls at the reception who will not allow you in until a member has signed you in so my advice is don’t turn up early. Once granted access to the inner sanctum we were given an approving nod by the almost mock CIA agent security guy and made our way to the bar to unwind with one of those fabled cocktails. The decor is a tasteful yet pleasingly decedent fusion of traditional (typical of Mayfair) and modern style, soft ambient light and intimate seating arrangements floating on a cloud of familiar yet expertly mixed lounge/chillout music. It sounded a lot like my place, if only I could get the staff. The cocktails lived up to their reputation and the famous “The Spicy Fifty” cocktail is one of the most original you will ever taste, and yes its made with chilli.
