Office & One Note 2007
Lately I’ve been going through a period which feels like I’m living to work. Working on a number of projects simultaneously, each of which is high-profile and of an urgent nature so I have been getting in early every morning and working late every evening in the hope that I can break their back. At last there is light emerging at the end of the tunnel and I’m on top of things once more.
I recently decided to upgrade my home computer from Office Xp to Office 2007 and I have to say I’m glad I did. Outlook 2007 has banished my spam quite effectively and the new integration with the iCalendar format means that I can easily email events and meetings between my home calendar and my exchange calendar at work. Also the new features of Word allow me to save documents in Adobe Reader format and as an inexpert Office user I love the new ribbon format, its just a shame that Microsoft made a bit of a dog’s dinner of implementing the ribbon on all of the suite with One Note escaping the makeover altogether.
Which brings me to my new best friend, Office One Note. If you’ve not heard of it before this is a note taking tool which works as a personal wiki designed around the tabbed notebook paradigm. The killer features which make it so useful to me are :
· Auto-save as you go
· Each paragraph/drawing item/inserted picture is date and time-stamped
· Powerful search, including text within images
· Integration with Outlook
· One-press to send email or web page to One Note, preserving links and source
· Print to One Note from any application, retaining source formatting
· Interactive team notebook sharing and merging
Not only that but it is so simple to learn that you are up and running in no time. This has to be the best Microsoft application I’ve ever come across. So much so I have had it installed for my entire team at work to use. The only downside being that desktop support refused to support 2007 (in spite of the license order coming through) and insisted I take the 2003 version which is sadly missing some of those killer features. Honestly, there’s my team working our guts out and these guys give us support straight out of Little Britain : “The computer says no”.

Don’t I know it, even today with this bloody conference coming up. This Office and One Note - would it work with Mac?
Apparently Office for Mac will be available in January 2008, named Office 2008. As far as I can tell there is no plan to port One Note to the Mac platform however most of its functionality is being ported to Mac Word 2008. It all looks very good.

I have Word for Mac here now.
Must be Office 2004 for the Mac, based on Windows Office 2003. The 2008 Mac version is based on 2007 for Windows, which looks pretty good.
I am glad I read this. We spend the day installing a new computer in our home with new features and the technician gave me the choice between office 2003 and 2007 but advised me for 2003. We have windows vista but we will have to keep XP because our HP scanner, an excellent one bought in 2000 and capable of high quality scanning photos and slides cannot be configured with Vista. My husband has a huge collection of slides from his travels and also we have many slides form when the children were small and cute, and we bought the scanner for this special purpose but we didn’t have the time to use it to scan our slides.
Thanks for your opinion on office 2007.
