Camden Burns

Camden Market BurnsA substantial fire has left serious damage throughout the Camden market area of London. Starting at about 19:30 last night it has now been bought under control leaving substantial damage in the market area but in spite of being a regular news reader I would have had no idea if it hadn’t been for my Spanish Mother in-law reporting it via Spanish news TV over the phone. One wonders why we bother with a state broadcasting company these days. Top headline at this moment is “Sharia row persists for Williams“, looks like agenda rather than news at the top of their list then.

I’ve been following it since it was reported in the Age, Melbourne, my first source for world news - they often get it before Britain.

School holidays are associated with conflagrations; derelict buildings with (or likely to get) preservation orders often catch fire if they are inconvenient to council development plans; and textile warehouses have a habit of exploding into flame during recessions. Any ideas as to the cause in this case?

At present investigators know the location of the start of the fire but not the cause. I’m sure this will be reported soon and I suspect it is quite likely it will be one of the items on your list. Developers have had their eye on the area for some time and why maintain the character of a historic part of London when you can use it to house thousands of in-bread religious fundamentalists; and then complain about them.

Although it is irritating as all get out on the whole, CNN usually keeps us up to date, if you sweep through there regularly. That and BBC World usually cover everything between them.
